Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.3K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Depressants01:28

Depressants

436
Depressant drugs, including alcohol and sedative-hypnotics, diminish central nervous system activity by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes relaxation. These substances can have various therapeutic uses but also pose significant risks, especially when misused or combined.
Alcohol is a common depressant that can induce a sense of relaxation and reduced inhibition at low doses. Contrary to its occasional...

Random and Systematic Errors01:20

Random and Systematic Errors

14.9K
Scientists always try their best to record measurements with the utmost accuracy and precision. However, sometimes errors do occur. These errors can be random or systematic. Random errors are observed due to the inconsistency or fluctuation in the measurement process, or variations in the quantity itself that is being measured. Such errors fluctuate from being greater than or less than the true value in repeated measurements. Consider a scientist measuring the length of an earthworm using a...

Summary

Pain and depression often co-occur, significantly impairing functioning. Treatments like ketamine, cannabinoids, and cognitive-behavioral therapy show promise for managing these intertwined conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Comorbid pain and depression are common, leading to substantial functional impairment.
  • Addressing both pain and depressive symptoms is crucial for effective treatment evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review studies on pain comorbid with depression.
  • To report the impact of current therapeutic interventions for these conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was performed based on predefined criteria.
  • Two authors independently analyzed full-text articles, reaching consensus on 28 included studies.

Main Results:

  • Pain and depression are highly intertwined, potentially co-exacerbating symptoms and leading to poor functional outcomes.
  • Serotonergic and norepinephrine systems are implicated biochemically; related antidepressants show pain-ameliorating effects.
  • Ketamine, cannabinoids, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) demonstrate potential efficacy for both conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with comorbid pain and depression exhibit greater functional deficits (physical, mental, social) than those with either condition alone.
  • Ketamine, psychotropic medications, and CBT represent promising therapeutic avenues for managing co-occurring pain and depression.
