  • To investigate the potential protective effects of caffeine on bladder function in a rat model of diabetes mellitus.
  • To assess caffeine's impact on urodynamic parameters in diabetic rats.

Main Methods:

  • Female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, DM, and DM groups receiving caffeine (5 or 10 mg/kg/day).
  • Diabetes mellitus was induced using streptozotocin (STZ).
  • Cystometric studies were performed after 8 weeks to measure bladder capacity, post-void residual volume (PVR), voiding time, peak voiding pressure, and voiding efficiency.

Main Results:

  • Diabetic rats exhibited increased bladder capacity, PVR, voiding time, and peak voiding pressure, with reduced voiding efficiency compared to controls.
  • Caffeine treatment significantly decreased bladder capacity, PVR, and peak voiding pressure in diabetic rats.
  • Caffeine administration markedly increased voiding efficiency in diabetic rats.

Conclusions:

  • Caffeine (5 or 10 mg/kg/day) demonstrates potential to improve bladder function in rats 8 weeks after STZ-induced diabetes.
  • Caffeine may represent a viable therapeutic strategy for enhancing voiding efficiency in diabetes-related bladder dysfunction.
