  • Risk factors for post-fracture stroke are not well understood due to its rarity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and identify risk factors for stroke occurring after bone fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 2914 adult patients with bone fractures.
  • Analysis of stroke onset within 25 days post-fracture.
  • Statistical analysis including univariate and multiple logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • Overall post-fracture stroke prevalence was 0.446%.
  • Hip fractures showed a higher prevalence (2.320%) compared to vertebral (0.124%) and femur (0.619%) fractures.
  • History of prior fracture was identified as an independent risk factor (OR=6.417), increasing stroke risk by 6.4-fold.

Conclusions:

  • History of prior fracture is a significant independent risk factor for post-fracture ischemic stroke.
  • Older age (>68 years) and hip fractures are associated with higher stroke prevalence.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate mechanisms and develop preventative strategies.
