Intertrochanteric fractures in an elderly white South African population
1Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Natal, Durban.
Abstract:
Intertrochanteric fractures of the hip are a common problem in any elderly population; 168 patients over 50 years of age were reviewed 13 or more months after surgery. The male to female ratio was 1:5. The 12-month mortality rate was 30.95% and slightly less than 50% of patients walked normally. Prognostic factors which may assist in patient management are identified.
