This study shows a web-delivered intervention improved blood glucose monitoring and control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The positive effects on self-monitoring and HbA1c were sustained six months later.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Type 1 diabetes (T1D) management requires daily adherence, which adolescents often struggle with, leading to poor glycemic control.
- Adolescent T1D is linked to high mortality and economic burden, highlighting the need for effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a web-delivered multicomponent intervention for adolescents with T1D.
- The intervention targeted self-monitoring of blood glucose, working memory, and parental supervision.
Main Methods:
- A pilot randomized controlled trial involved 61 adolescents with poorly controlled T1D.
- Participants were assigned to either usual care or a 25-week web-delivered intervention (WebRx).
- WebRx included incentives, cognitive behavioral therapy, working memory training, and parent training.
Main Results:
- WebRx participants showed improved blood glucose self-monitoring, working memory, and lower HbA1c levels compared to usual care.
- Parents in the WebRx group reported increased glucometer review and reduced family conflict.
- Improvements in self-monitoring, working memory, family conflict, and HbA1c were sustained at 6-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
- The web-delivered multicomponent intervention demonstrated sustained positive effects on key T1D management outcomes.
- Results support further investigation with a larger trial to validate this innovative approach.
