Summary

Computed tomography (CT) protocols significantly impact body composition analysis. Contrast media strongly affects results, while slice thickness has a lesser influence. Radiation dose can be reduced without compromising accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of contrast media phase, radiation dose, and slice thickness on CT-based body composition segmentation.
  • To determine the optimal CT parameters for accurate body composition analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 20 patients undergoing contrast-enhanced CT of the upper abdomen.
  • Semi-automatic segmentation of muscle and fat areas using established thresholds.
  • Evaluation of skeletal muscle index (SMI), steatotic muscle area, adipose tissue index, and tissue attenuation under different CT protocols.

Main Results:

  • Contrast media significantly altered SMI, steatotic muscle area, adipose tissue index, and tissue attenuation (P < 0.001).
  • Increased slice thickness moderately affected SMI, steatotic muscle area, and adipose tissue index (P < 0.05).
  • Radiation dose variations did not significantly impact the segmentation of muscle and fat areas.

  • Slice thickness has a less pronounced effect compared to contrast media.
  • Radiation dose can be reduced by up to 66% without significantly compromising body composition segmentation accuracy.
