The PREDIMED-Plus physical activity intervention effectively increased daily activity in older adults. This lifestyle intervention led to significant improvements in physical activity levels and reductions in BMI and waist circumference over 12 months.

  • A secondary analysis of PA data from 6059 participants (mean age 65 years) in the PREDIMED-Plus randomized clinical trial.
  • Generalized estimating equation models were used to evaluate time trends and group differences in PA, BMI, and WC.

  • Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) increased significantly more in the intervention group (123.1 METs-min/day) compared to the control group (27.2 METs-min/day).

Conclusions:

  • The PREDIMED-Plus physical activity intervention demonstrated effectiveness in increasing daily PA in older adults after one year.
  • The intervention's impact on PA was not moderated by age, sex, education, or BMI.
