Summary

Popliteal venous aneurysms are rare vascular anomalies that can cause recurrent pulmonary emboli. Surgical intervention appears effective in preventing further embolic events in patients with this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Popliteal venous aneurysms are uncommon vascular malformations.
  • They often present as recurrent pulmonary emboli in individuals without typical risk factors for deep venous thrombosis.

Observation:

  • Physical examination is generally not diagnostic for popliteal venous aneurysms.
  • Combined real-time and Doppler ultrasound can suggest the diagnosis.
  • Venography is essential for confirmation and detailed anatomical assessment.

Findings:

  • This report adds two new cases to seven previously documented instances of popliteal venous aneurysms.
  • Eight patients, including the two new cases, underwent surgical treatment.
  • No recurrence of pulmonary embolism was observed post-surgery in any of the eight patients.

Implications:

  • Popliteal venous aneurysms should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained recurrent pulmonary emboli.
  • While challenging, surgical management may offer a definitive solution for preventing further embolic complications.
  • Accurate diagnosis relies on advanced imaging techniques, particularly venography.
