Area of Science:

  • Critical care medicine
  • Infectious disease

Background:

  • Suppurative thrombophlebitis (ST) is a significant complication in critical care settings.
  • Despite existing knowledge and precautions, ST presents a considerable challenge with high mortality rates.
  • The incidence of ST is reported around 4%, with mortality reaching up to 83%.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify additional risk factors for suppurative thrombophlebitis.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of new surveillance and prevention guidelines for ST.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study design.
  • Analysis of patient data to identify risk factors.
  • Review of outcomes following implementation of new guidelines.

Main Results:

  • Emergency department or field placement of catheters identified as a risk factor.
  • Administration of potassium boluses identified as a risk factor.
  • New guidelines for surveillance and prevention demonstrated success in managing ST.

Conclusions:

  • Suppurative thrombophlebitis remains a critical concern in intensive care units.
  • Specific practices like emergency catheterization and potassium boluses may increase ST risk.
  • Implementation of updated surveillance and prevention strategies is effective in mitigating ST incidence and outcomes.
