The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

7.7K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Functions of Thyroid Hormones

5.6K
The thyroid hormone (TH) plays a pivotal role in the intricate orchestration of physiological processes, exerting profound effects on development, metabolism, and homeostasis throughout different life stages.
TH is indispensable for the normal development and maturation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems during fetal and childhood growth. It facilitates bone mineral turnover and regulates protein synthesis in developing tissues, contributing significantly to overall growth and...

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

7.8K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Computed Tomography

8.3K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Rheumatic Heart Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

587
The key clinical manifestations of Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include several distinct cardiac symptoms.Carditis, a hallmark of acute rheumatic fever, involves inflammation of the heart's endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Chronic RHD often results from recurrent episodes of carditis. Its symptoms include the following:Murmurs are caused by valvular damage, especially to the mitral and aortic valves. Mitral stenosis or regurgitation is common, with characteristic heart murmurs...

Summary

Computed tomography (CT) effectively differentiates diffuse thyroid disease (DTD) from normal thyroid parenchyma (NTP). This multicenter study found CT imaging helpful in diagnosing thyroid conditions, with specific features improving accuracy.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Differentiating diffuse thyroid disease (DTD) from normal thyroid parenchyma (NTP) is crucial for patient management.
  • Computed tomography (CT) is a widely used imaging modality in neck evaluations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of CT in distinguishing DTD from NTP.
  • To assess CT's accuracy using multicenter data and compare it with histopathological findings.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of neck CT scans from 229 patients who underwent thyroid surgery.
  • Classification of CT images into four categories: no DTD, indeterminate, suspicious for DTD, and DTD.
  • Comparison of CT findings with post-operative histopathological results.

Main Results:

  • CT imaging demonstrated diagnostic utility in differentiating DTD from NTP.
  • The presence of two or more CT features indicative of DTD showed the highest diagnostic performance (Az = 0.820).
  • Sensitivity was 85.9% and specificity was 78.2% for the "suspicious for DTD" category.

Conclusions:

  • CT evaluations are valuable for differentiating diffuse thyroid disease from normal thyroid parenchyma.
  • No significant difference in diagnostic accuracy was observed based on radiologists' experience levels.
  • CT imaging aids in the preoperative assessment of thyroid conditions.
