    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
    • Immune system dysregulation, particularly involving lymphocytes, is implicated in psoriasis pathogenesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the distribution of thymus-derived (T) and bone marrow-derived (B) lymphocytes in patients with psoriasis.
    • To explore potential mechanisms underlying T-cell abnormalities in active psoriasis.

    Main Methods:

    • Rosetting techniques were used to quantify T and B lymphocytes in 100 psoriasis patients.
    • Lymphocyte function was assessed using sheep erythrocyte (E) rosettes and complement receptor (EAC) rosettes.
    • The effect of serum factors and concanavalin A (Con A) on rosette formation was examined.

    Main Results:

    • A significant decrease in T lymphocytes forming E rosettes was observed in 66% of psoriasis patients, particularly during active disease phases.
    • No differences in B lymphocytes forming EAC rosettes were found between psoriatic patients and healthy controls.
    • Increased lymphocytes lacking both E and EAC rosettes were identified as T lymphocytes, regaining function after Con A preincubation.
    • A serum factor inhibiting E rosette formation was detected, with activity increasing with disease duration.

    Conclusions:

    • Active psoriasis is associated with a transient reduction in T lymphocytes, likely due to serum factors interfering with T-cell receptors or function.
    • These findings suggest a role for immune system modulation in psoriasis management.
