Brain Waves01:23

Brain Waves

4.1K
Brain waves are electrical signals generated by the neurons in the brain, which are regularly monitored to measure mental activities. Brain waves and their frequency ranges can be measured using an electroencephalogram or EEG. There are four main types of brain waves, each with distinct characteristics:

Organization of the Brain01:30

Organization of the Brain

2.7K
The brain is an integral component of the nervous system and serves as the center for processing sensory inputs, making decisions, and directing bodily actions. This complex organ is organized into three primary sections: the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain, each responsible for a range of vital functions.
Hindbrain
The hindbrain, located at the base of the brain, plays a vital role in regulating automatic processes that sustain life. It includes the medulla oblongata, which is essential for...

Brain Imaging01:14

Brain Imaging

743
Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic...

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles01:18

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

8.9K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Neurons as Communicators of the Brain01:22

Neurons as Communicators of the Brain

3.2K
Neurons, the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, function as the primary transmitters of information throughout the body. Their ability to communicate through electrical and chemical signals is vital for every bodily function, from regulating the heartbeat to processing complex thoughts. Each neuron has three main components: the cell body (soma), dendrites, and an axon, each specialized to facilitate swift and efficient neural communication.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neuropathology
  • Dementia Research

Background:

  • Establishing a nationwide brain bank is crucial for advancing neurodegenerative disease research.
  • The National Neuropathology Reference and Diagnostic Laboratories for Dementia in South Korea have been operational since 2016.
  • A network of brain banks facilitates the collection of crucial neuropathological data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a nationwide brain bank network for collecting neurodegenerative disease brain tissues.
  • To enable clinic-pathological and image-pathological correlation analyses.
  • To deepen the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly in the Korean population.

Main Methods:

  • Recruitment of participants from memory clinics and the community.
  • Baseline evaluations included clinical interviews, neurological and neuropsychological tests, and MRI.
  • Amyloid Positron Emission Tomography (PET) was performed on a subset of patients.

Main Results:

  • 105 participants were recruited; 11 underwent autopsy.
  • Autopsied cases included Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia, primary progressive aphasia, leukoencephalopathy, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
  • Amyloid PET was conducted on five patients, including those with AD, mixed dementia, FTD, and CJD.

Conclusions:

  • Future clinical and neuropathological data will enhance understanding of cognitive impairment mechanisms in Asia.
  • This cohort provides valuable insights into neurodegenerative diseases in Korea.
  • The brain bank network supports critical research into dementia.
