Summary

A young woman experienced rapid, painful finger swelling. Diagnostic imaging, including CT and MRI, was used to investigate the cause of her symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Radiology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • A 28-year-old woman presented with acute, painful swelling of her right third finger.
  • Symptoms included nocturnal pain and morning stiffness, with no prior medical history.
  • Clinical examination revealed finger swelling, cyanotic skin, and fingernail splitting on the contralateral hand.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the etiology of rapidly developing painful finger swelling.
  • To utilize advanced imaging techniques for diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical examination of the affected hand.
  • Laboratory tests to rule out inflammatory conditions.
  • Radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the hands.

Main Results:

  • Laboratory results were normal, excluding inflammatory disease.
  • Imaging studies (radiographs, CT, MRI) were performed to visualize the affected finger and surrounding structures.
  • Specific findings from imaging were not detailed in the abstract but were crucial for diagnosis.

Conclusions:

  • The case highlights the importance of comprehensive diagnostic workup for acute, painful finger swelling.
  • Advanced imaging modalities like CT and MRI are valuable in identifying the underlying pathology.
  • Further investigation is needed to determine the specific diagnosis and optimal treatment strategy.
