Background:

  • Neurologic dysfunction (ND) is a frequent and potentially fatal complication in patients receiving continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD) support.
  • Detailed data on neurologic mortality in this population remain scarce.
  • This study addresses the critical need for understanding ND-related mortality during CF-LVAD therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics and mortality associated with neurologic dysfunction in patients undergoing CF-LVAD support.
  • To identify predictors of fatal neurologic dysfunction in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 526 patients who received CF-LVAD implantation (HeartMate II and HVAD) between 2003 and 2016.
  • Categorization of ND into hemorrhagic and ischemic types, with detailed analysis of ND-related deaths.
  • Cox multivariable logistic regression was employed to determine predictors of ND-related mortality.

Main Results:

  • Neurologic dysfunction occurred in 26.8% of patients, leading to death in 9.1%.
