Summary

Twice-daily Capozide effectively lowers blood pressure in black men with hypertension. Both 25/15 and 50/15 dosages showed similar efficacy and good tolerability, with most patients achieving normal blood pressure levels.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Essential hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular condition.
  • Black men represent a significant demographic affected by hypertension.
  • Understanding effective treatment options for this population is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of two Capozide (captopril/hydrochlorothiazide) dosages in black men with essential hypertension.
  • To assess the tolerability and safety of Capozide treatment in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Open-label trial involving 24 black men with mild to moderate essential hypertension.
  • Placebo washout period followed by a 6-week active-drug phase.
  • Patients randomized to Capozide 25/15 mg or 50/15 mg twice daily.

Main Results:

  • Significant reduction in mean blood pressure (BP) from baseline in both groups.
  • Group A (25/15 mg) BP changed from 151.0/100.7 to 128.7/84.4 mm Hg.
  • Group B (50/15 mg) BP changed from 153.1/100.7 to 126.8/82.7 mm Hg.
  • Eighteen of 22 patients achieved normal BP levels at study completion.
  • No adverse events reported; slight increases in uric acid, BUN, and creatinine observed.

Conclusions:

  • Twice-daily Capozide is an effective and well-tolerated antihypertensive treatment for black men.
  • Both tested dosages (25/15 mg and 50/15 mg) demonstrated comparable efficacy.
  • Capozide offers a viable treatment option for essential hypertension in this population.
