Kinesio tape (KT) application to the foot and ankle significantly improved balance and functional performance in older adults. This intervention also reduced the risk of falls in this population.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Biomechanics
- Physical Therapy
Background:
- Foot and ankle function are critical for balance and mobility in older adults.
- Falls in older adults are a significant public health concern.
- Interventions like taping and orthoses can enhance foot posture and ground contact.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of Kinesio tape (KT) on functional performance, balance, lower extremity strength, pain, and functional independence in older adults.
- To assess both short-term (two-week) and prolonged effects of KT application.
Main Methods:
- Randomized trial involving 42 older adults (≥65 years).
- Participants were assigned to either Kinesio tape (KT) group (N.=22) or a control group (N.=20).
- Evaluations included the Visual Analog Scale, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and Functional Independence Measurement.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements were observed in TUG and BBS scores in the Kinesio tape group post-application (P=0.001 and P<0.0001, respectively).
Conclusions:
- Kinesio tape application to the foot and ankle enhances balance and functional performance in older adults.
- KT may be an effective intervention for reducing fall risk in this demographic.
