Objectives:
KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) gut colonisation is a major risk factor for developing systemic infection. Ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ/AVI) may have a role as decolonisation therapy in special situations.
Methods:
This was a retrospective, observational, multicentre study. The KPC-Kp gut decolonisation rate of CAZ/AVI-based therapy (Group A) was compared with other antimicrobial regimens (Group B) in patients with KPC-Kp infection.
Results:
Among 12 patients in Group A, 11 (91.7%) achieved gut decolonisation. None of the 24 patients of Group B were decolonised.
Conclusion:
CAZ/AVI-based therapy could be useful in KPC-Kp gut decolonisation in high-risk patients.
Insights
Ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ/AVI) therapy shows promise for decolonizing the gut of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp). This approach may prevent systemic infections in high-risk patients.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Gut colonization by KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) is a significant risk factor for invasive infections.
- Effective decolonization strategies are crucial for preventing severe outcomes in high-risk individuals.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ/AVI)-based therapy for KPC-Kp gut decolonization.
- To compare CAZ/AVI therapy with other antimicrobial regimens in patients with KPC-Kp infection.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective, observational, multicenter study design.
- Comparison of KPC-Kp gut decolonization rates between CAZ/AVI therapy (Group A) and other antimicrobial regimens (Group B).
Main Results:
- High gut decolonization rate (91.7%) was achieved with CAZ/AVI-based therapy in 11 out of 12 patients.
- No gut decolonization was observed in the 24 patients treated with other antimicrobial regimens (Group B).
Conclusions:
- CAZ/AVI-based therapy demonstrates significant potential for KPC-Kp gut decolonization.
- This therapeutic approach may be beneficial for high-risk patients requiring KPC-Kp decolonization.
