Preparation and Reactions of Sulfides02:26

Preparation and Reactions of Sulfides

5.8K
Sulfides are the sulfur analog of ethers, just as thiols are the sulfur analog of alcohol. Like ethers, sulfides also consist of two hydrocarbon groups bonded to the central sulfur atom. Depending upon the type of groups present, sulfides can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical sulfides can be prepared via an SN2 reaction between 2 equivalents of an alkyl halide and one equivalent of sodium sulfide.

Structure and Nomenclature of Thiols and Sulfides

5.7K
Thiols and sulfides are sulfur analogs of alcohols and ethers, respectively, where the sulfur atom takes the place of the oxygen atom. Thus, thiols are generally represented as RSH, where R is an alkyl substituent and —SH is the functional group. On the other hand, in sulfides, the central sulfur atom is bonded to two hydrocarbon groups on either side. Depending upon the type of group, sulfides can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Both thiols and sulfides display a bent geometry,...

Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

5.4K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Concepts of Health and Illness01:29

Concepts of Health and Illness

17.8K
Health is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit where an individual remains free from illness. Similarly, wellness is an active state, including living a lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. Physical health is critical for the overall well-being and can be affected by lifestyle, activity level, diet, and behavior. The highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental and universal human right. Consider Lisa, a fifteen-year-old born with congenital...

    Area of Science:

    • Environmental Science
    • Occupational Health
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Minnesota's mining history is rooted in iron ore extraction.
    • Copper-nickel sulfide mining presents new environmental challenges compared to traditional iron mining.
    • Sulfide mining processes can generate acid waste and sulfates, leading to heavy metal contamination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the environmental and human health risks associated with copper-nickel sulfide mining.
    • To inform present and future sulfide mining proposals by considering health impacts.
    • To educate Minnesota physicians on the potential adverse health effects of sulfide mining.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of environmental impacts of sulfide mining.
    • Analysis of heavy metal mobilization and neurotoxins (lead, mercury).
    • Assessment of airborne pollutants and their health implications.

    Main Results:

    • Sulfide mining can release neurotoxic heavy metals like lead and mercury into the environment.
    • Airborne fibers and pollutants from mining activities may increase morbidity.
    • Both short-term and long-term health effects are potential concerns.

    Conclusions:

    • Copper-nickel sulfide mining introduces significant environmental and health risks distinct from iron mining.
    • Understanding the toxicological profile of sulfide mining byproducts is crucial.
    • Physicians require knowledge of sulfide mining's health impacts on workers and communities.
