Abstract:
The prophylaxis of deep venous thrombosis is critically related to potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Each of the available agents has benefits and drawbacks which are reviewed in this article. While the search for the ideal method of prophylaxis continues, the appropriate agent appears to be one that balances the risk of complication with the potential risk of development of thromboembolism. Recommendations for acceptable prophylaxis are made for various procedures.
