  • Achieving a uniform wall angle is critical for ideal convergence angles in fixed prosthodontics.
  • A novel detachable angle-correction apparatus for dental handpiece drills was developed to aid precise tooth preparation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel angle-correction device for dental handpiece drills.
  • To assess the device's effectiveness in reducing convergence angles during tooth preparation.

Main Methods:

  • A gyro sensor, acceleration sensor, and Kalman filter algorithm were used to calculate object slope.
  • A matrix formulation converted handpiece body angulation to drill part angulation.
  • 16 volunteers performed tooth preparation on resin teeth; prepared abutments were 3D scanned and analyzed using CAD software.

Main Results:

  • The device maintained a stable zero point with less than 1° deviation at various angles.
  • Without the apparatus, average bucco-lingual (BL) and mesio-distal (MD) convergence angles were 20.26° and 17.88°, respectively.
  • With the apparatus, average BL and MD convergence angles significantly reduced to 13.21° and 10.79°, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • The developed angle correction device provides high accuracy, comparable to commercial surgical navigation systems.
  • The device's compact size is significantly smaller than existing commercial navigation systems.
  • This apparatus is anticipated for widespread use in various orofacial surgery applications.
