  • To identify specific social interaction factors that predict financial exploitation in older adults.

  • Survey and interview data collected from 395 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and older.
  • Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis used to assess predictors of FE.
  • Included variables: perceived social support, social network size, positive/negative interactions, dependency, physical health, depression, cognition, and demographics.

  • Negative interactions with close network members significantly predicted financial exploitation.
  • This association remained significant after controlling for other social support factors and risk variables.
  • Perceived social support and social network size were not unique predictors of FE.

Conclusions:

  • Negative social interactions among close network members are a critical factor in elder financial exploitation.
  • Assessment of negative social interactions should be integrated into FE prevention and intervention strategies.
  • Further research is needed on the interplay between social interactions and other risk factors for FE.
