Abstract:
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the prostate has been used for over 20 years as the prostate biopsy technique of choice throughout much of Europe. However, this technique has only recently gained acceptance in the United States. There is now an enlarging body of data confirming that fine-needle aspiration can be viewed as a safe, accurate, and reliable means for detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer. This review summarizes the European and United States experience with fine-needle aspiration and supports the utility of this biopsy technique as an important addition to the urologist's diagnostic armamentarium.
