Four new bis-hydrazone compounds were synthesized and studied for polymorphism. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 exhibited polymorphism, with compounds 1 and 2 showing packing polymorphism and compounds 3 and 4 displaying conformational polymorphism.
Area of Science:
- Solid-state chemistry
- Crystallography
- Organic synthesis
Background:
- Bis-hydrazone compounds are versatile organic molecules with potential applications in various fields.
- Polymorphism, the ability of a solid material to exist in multiple crystalline forms, can significantly impact a compound's physical and chemical properties.
- Understanding the polymorphism of new compounds is crucial for their development and application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize four new bis-hydrazone compounds.
- To investigate the solid-state polymorphism of these synthesized compounds.
- To differentiate between packing polymorphism and conformational polymorphism in the studied compounds.
Main Methods:
- Condensation reaction between substituted benzophenone hydrazone and butane-2,3-dione to synthesize the target compounds.
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction to determine the crystal structures of the polymorphs.
- Computational studies to confirm the observed packing polymorphism.
Main Results:
- Four new bis-hydrazone compounds were successfully synthesized.
- Concomitant polymorphism was observed in compounds 1, 2, and 3.
- Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited packing polymorphism, characterized by conformational adjustment in crystal structures.
- Compounds 3 and 4 displayed conformational polymorphism, involving changes in molecular conformation.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully synthesized and characterized four novel bis-hydrazone compounds.
- Polymorphism is a significant characteristic of these compounds, with distinct types observed.
- The findings contribute to the understanding of structure-property relationships in bis-hydrazone derivatives and highlight the importance of solid-state characterization.
