Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the risk of developing lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers.
  • To provide robust epidemiological data on the relationship between mental health conditions and cancer incidence.
  • To clarify existing conflicting evidence regarding stress-related disorders and malignancy risk.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted four nested case-control studies using a large UK population-based database.
  • Matched cases (individuals with cancer diagnosis) with four controls based on age, sex, practice site, and follow-up duration.
  • Utilized multivariable conditional logistic regression, adjusting for smoking, obesity, and antidepressant use, to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant association was found between PTSD diagnosis and the risk of lung cancer (OR = 0.73, 95% CI [0.43, 1.23]).
  • Similarly, no significant link was observed for breast cancer (OR = 0.73, 95% CI [0.52, 1.01]), prostate cancer (OR = 1.24, 95% CI [0.87, 1.77]), or colorectal cancer (OR = 1.05, 95% CI [0.68, 1.62]).
  • The study included a substantial number of cases: 19,143 for lung, 31,352 for breast, 27,212 for prostate, and 22,163 for colorectal cancer.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) do not appear to be at an increased risk for developing lung, breast, prostate, or colorectal cancers.
  • These findings contribute to a clearer understanding of the relationship between mental health disorders and the risk of common solid tumors.
  • Further research may explore other potential cancer types or different stress-related conditions.
