Area of Science:

  • Neurotology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Schwannomas are tumors that develop on nerves.
  • Intralabyrinthine schwannomas are rare tumors located within the inner ear.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of intralabyrinthine schwannomas is challenging.

Observation:

  • A case of intralabyrinthine schwannoma discovered during translabyrinthine eighth nerve section is presented.
  • A review of 22 previously reported cases was conducted.

Findings:

  • Intralabyrinthine schwannomas present significant diagnostic challenges.
  • The diagnosis is frequently missed preoperatively.

Implications:

  • Missed diagnosis can affect surgical planning and outcomes in neurotologic surgery.
  • Increased awareness and improved diagnostic methods are needed for intralabyrinthine schwannomas.
  • This condition may be underdiagnosed in patients experiencing vertigo.
