A new specialty pharmacy elective course significantly improved pharmacy students' knowledge by 27.7%. Students found the course valuable, recommending its expansion to enhance understanding of this critical pharmacy practice area.

Background:

Specialty pharmacy is crucial for managing complex medications and patient care.
Emerging specialty drugs necessitate pharmacy student education in this specialized field.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the development of a specialty pharmacy elective course.
To address the educational need for pharmacy students in specialty pharmacy.

Main Methods:

A one-credit specialty pharmacy elective course was developed for second and third-year pharmacy students.
Content experts delivered lectures and led discussions.
Student knowledge and satisfaction were assessed pre- and post-course.

Main Results:

Student knowledge of specialty pharmacy practice increased by 27.7%.
Students evaluated the course positively.
Recommendations were made to expand the course duration.

Conclusions:

The specialty pharmacy elective course successfully enhanced student knowledge.
The course was well-received by students.
Other pharmacy colleges should consider implementing similar specialty pharmacy curricula.
