The Thoracic Cage: Ribs01:20

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs

8.7K
Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages.
Parts of a Typical Rib
A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal...

Simple Pendulum01:10

Simple Pendulum

8.1K
A simple pendulum consists of a small diameter ball suspended from a string, which has negligible mass but is strong enough to not stretch. In our daily life, pendulums have many uses, such as in clocks, on a swing set, and on a sinker on a fishing line.
The period of a simple pendulum depends on two factors: its length and the acceleration due to gravity. The period is completely independent of any other factors, such as mass or maximum displacement. For small displacements, a pendulum is...

Simple Trusses01:21

Simple Trusses

2.9K
A truss is a structural framework consisting of slender members connected at joints, designed to support external loads while minimizing material usage and weight. Simple trusses are a type of planar truss where all members lie within a single two-dimensional plane.
The most basic planar truss is a simple truss with three members arranged in a triangular formation. This triangular truss is inherently stable and rigid due to its geometry, making it an ideal starting point for creating more...

Simple Harmonic Motion01:21

Simple Harmonic Motion

15.1K
Simple harmonic motion is the name given to oscillatory motion for a system where the net force can be described by Hooke's law. If the net force can be described by Hooke's law and there is no damping (by friction or other non-conservative forces), then a simple harmonic oscillator will oscillate with equal displacement on either side of the equilibrium position. To derive an equation for period and frequency, the equation of motion is used. The period of a simple harmonic oscillator is given...

Bone Structure01:55

Bone Structure

51.7K
Within the skeletal system, the structure of a bone, or osseous tissue, can be exemplified in a long bone, like the femur, where there are two types of osseous tissue: cortical and cancellous.

Bone Remodeling01:40

Bone Remodeling

40.4K
Bone remodeling is a continuous and balanced process of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. In adults, it helps maintain bone mass and calcium homeostasis. While mechanical stress can stimulate turnover as part of the normal maintenance and reparative process, several hormones also regulate bone remodeling.

Summary

Simple bone cysts are rare, especially in ribs. This case highlights successful surgical excision of a simple bone cyst in a 15-year-old girl's rib.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Skeletal Pathology

Background:

  • Simple bone cysts (SBCs) are benign, fluid-filled lytic bone lesions.
  • Typically occurring in the metaphysis of long bones in children and adolescents.
  • SBCs of the rib are exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases.

Observation:

  • A 15-year-old female presented with a rare presentation of a simple bone cyst.
  • The lesion was located in the sixth rib.
  • The cyst was successfully managed through surgical excision.

Findings:

  • The case confirms the possibility of simple bone cysts occurring in ribs.
  • Surgical excision proved to be an effective treatment modality.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the benign nature of the lesion.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known anatomical distribution of simple bone cysts.
  • Highlights surgical excision as a viable treatment option for rib SBCs.
  • Contributes to the limited literature on rib simple bone cysts, aiding future diagnosis and management.
