Technical assistance workshops improved knowledge, attitudes, and skills for implementing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) in cancer prevention. This strategy enhanced collaboration among state teams for increasing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and colorectal cancer (CRC) screening.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Cancer Prevention and Control
- Health Services Research
Background:
- National efforts support technical assistance for cancer coalitions.
- A gap exists in understanding technical assistance's role in implementing evidence-based interventions (EBIs).
- This study addresses the need to evaluate technical assistance effectiveness.
Purpose of the Study:
- Evaluate the impact of technical assistance on participants' knowledge, attitudes, and skills for implementing EBIs.
- Assess the enhancement of state team collaboration through technical assistance.
- Determine the utility of technical assistance in accelerating cancer prevention EBIs.
Main Methods:
- Web-based questionnaires administered to 44 human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination workshop participants and 66 colorectal cancer (CRC) screening workshop participants.
- Data collected between August and November 2017.
- Evaluation focused on changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to EBI implementation.
Main Results:
- Participants reported enhanced knowledge, attitudes, and skills for implementing EBIs in their local contexts.
- Increased abilities in partner communication and coordination were noted.
- Participants utilized additional implementation strategies to boost HPV vaccination uptake and CRC screening rates.
Conclusions:
- Technical assistance is valuable for comprehensive cancer control coalitions.
- It effectively promotes collaboration and builds capacity for implementing cancer prevention EBIs.
- Findings support the use of technical assistance to accelerate EBI implementation.
