The continuous autotransfusion device CATSmart effectively conserves blood by achieving sufficient red cell separation and washout quality in cardiac and orthopedic surgeries. This new device shows promising performance for autologous blood transfusion.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Transfusion Medicine
- Surgical Technology
Background:
- Cell salvage and autologous blood transfusion are key blood conservation methods.
- Clinical data on the continuous autotransfusion device CATSmart performance was previously lacking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To perform a technical evaluation of the CATSmart device.
- To validate the red cell separation and washout quality of the CATSmart device.
Main Methods:
- Prospective, bicenter, observational study.
- 74 patients undergoing cardiac or orthopedic surgery.
- Evaluation of red cell separation (hematocrit 55-75%) and washout quality (80-100% removal ratio).
Main Results:
- Achieved hematocrit values of 78.5% (CATSmart) and 73.7% (lab).
- High removal ratios for platelets (94.7%), free hemoglobin (89.3%), albumin (97.9%), heparin (99.9%), and potassium (92.5%).
- White blood cell removal was 72.4%, slightly below target.
Conclusions:
- The CATSmart device provides sufficient red cell separation.
- The device demonstrates adequate washout quality for autologous blood transfusion.
