Band Theory02:35

Band Theory

17.2K
When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Energy Bands in Solids

2.0K
Isolated atoms have discrete energy levels that are well described by the Bohr model. And, it quantifies the energy of an electron in a hydrogen atom as En. Higher quantum numbers 'n' yield less negative, closer electron energy levels.
 Band Formation:
When atoms are brought close together, as in a solid, these discrete energy levels begin to split due to the overlap of electron orbitals from adjacent atoms. This split occurs because of the Pauli exclusion principle, which states...

Random and Systematic Errors01:20

Random and Systematic Errors

14.9K
Scientists always try their best to record measurements with the utmost accuracy and precision. However, sometimes errors do occur. These errors can be random or systematic. Random errors are observed due to the inconsistency or fluctuation in the measurement process, or variations in the quantity itself that is being measured. Such errors fluctuate from being greater than or less than the true value in repeated measurements. Consider a scientist measuring the length of an earthworm using a...

Systematic Sampling Method01:17

Systematic Sampling Method

13.3K
Sampling is a technique to select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion (the sample) to gain information about the population. Data are the result of sampling from a population. The sampling method ensures that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population. Because measuring the entire population in a study is not practical, researchers use samples to represent the population of interest.
Systematic sampling is one of the simplest methods...

Summary

Primary banded sleeve gastrectomy (BSG) shows comparable short-term weight loss to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) but lacks long-term data. Further randomized trials are needed to evaluate BSG

Area of Science:

  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Metabolic Surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is a common bariatric procedure.
  • Primary banded sleeve gastrectomy (BSG) is a less frequently reported variation.
  • Comparative data on BSG versus LSG is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential advantages of primary banded sleeve gastrectomy (BSG) compared to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
  • To synthesize current evidence on BSG outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search conducted following PRISMA guidelines.
  • Inclusion of studies reporting on primary BSG and LSG outcomes.
  • Data extraction on patient demographics, operative details, and postoperative results.

Main Results:

  • Study included 236 patients (mean age 45.4 years, BMI 47.9 kg/m²).
  • Mean %EWL at 12 months was 77.4%.
  • Complication rate 11.8%, reoperation rate 5.5%, mortality rate 0.85%.

Conclusions:

  • Primary BSG demonstrates promising short-term efficacy similar to LSG.
  • Limited long-term data exists for primary BSG.
  • Randomized controlled trials with extended follow-up are essential for definitive evaluation.
