Construction accidents stem from complex system failures, not just individual actions. This study identifies four key patterns in safety management to improve construction site safety.
Area of Science:
- Construction Management
- Occupational Safety and Health
- Systems Engineering
Background:
- Safe behavior and work conditions are critical in construction projects.
- Accidents often result from systemic failures rather than isolated factors.
- A systematic approach is needed to understand the complexity of construction accidents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To continuously detect and categorize recurring behavior patterns in construction safety management.
- To provide a systematic framework for understanding and addressing construction safety issues.
- To identify actionable insights for improving safety protocols.
Main Methods:
- Content analysis of 90 global research articles.
- Grounded Theory Method (GTM) applied to qualitative data.
- 20 in-depth interviews with experienced construction health and safety professionals.
Main Results:
- Identification of four recurring archetypes influencing construction safety: design delays, subcontractor volume, project cost-safety trade-offs, and supervisor involvement.
- Detailed analysis of each archetype's dynamic complexity and temporal behavior.
- Determination of leverage points for intervention within each archetype.
Conclusions:
- Construction safety requires a systemic perspective to manage complex, interconnected factors.
- Understanding these four archetypes offers targeted strategies for accident prevention.
- Proactive management of identified patterns can significantly enhance workplace safety in construction.
