Summary

Severe malaria patients on quinine may develop hypoglycemia. Careful monitoring of plasma glucose is crucial during quinine therapy to prevent dangerously low blood sugar levels.

Background:

  • Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria is a life-threatening condition.
  • Quinine is a primary treatment for malaria but can have side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the incidence of hypoglycemia in severe malaria patients.
  • To investigate the role of quinine in causing hypoglycemia.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 46 patients with severe P. falciparum malaria.
  • Measured plasma glucose and insulin levels before, during, and after quinine treatment.

Main Results:

  • Hypoglycemia occurred in 5 patients, with one pregnant patient reaching 0.67 mmol/litre.
  • Most patients showed a significant decrease in plasma glucose and an increase in plasma insulin after quinine.
