Dementia01:30

Dementia

576
Dementia is a collective term for cognitive disorders primarily affecting memory, thinking, and reasoning. It is not a specific disease but a syndrome, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common cause, accounting for approximately 60-80% of cases. Other types include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Dementia affects millions worldwide, particularly older adults, though it is not a normal part of aging.
The progression of dementia is generally gradual....

Histone Variants at the Centromere02:30

Histone Variants at the Centromere

5.1K
Histone variants are the histone proteins with structural and sequence variations. These variants may be regarded as “mutant” forms that replace their canonical histone counterparts in the nucleosomes. Specific post-translational modifications on the histone variants enable further chromatin complexity and regulate tissue-specific gene expression. The most common histone variants are from histone H2A, H2B, and linker histone H1 families. However, several variants of histone H3...

Relative Risk01:12

Relative Risk

2.1K
Relative risk (RR) is a statistical measure commonly used in epidemiology to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring between two groups. This metric is important for evaluating the relationship between exposure to a specific risk factor and the probability of a particular outcome. It plays a crucial role in medical research, public health studies, and risk assessment. Relative risk quantifies how much more (or less) likely an event is to occur in an exposed group compared to an...

What is Behavior?00:54

What is Behavior?

10.3K
Behaviors are actions that an organism engages in—they can be related to finding food, reproducing, defending against threats, and many other possible actions. Behaviors include activities related to the environment around the animal—such as migration—as well as social interactions within a species or population. Many behaviors involve motor output—that is, muscle movements—while others involve less visible actions, such as learning.

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

13.5K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Behaviorism01:28

Behaviorism

4.8K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting personality and behavior.
  • Suicidality is a significant concern in various neurological conditions, but its prevalence in bvFTD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in patients diagnosed with bvFTD.
  • To identify potential risk factors associated with suicidality in the bvFTD population.

Main Methods:

  • The Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) was employed to assess suicide risk.
  • A cohort of 35 patients with bvFTD and 25 healthy controls participated in the study.

Main Results:

  • 40% of bvFTD patients reported suicidal ideation, compared to 8% of controls (P = .009).
  • Four bvFTD patients attempted suicide, versus none in the control group (P = .006).
  • Elevated anxiety, depression, stress, and hopelessness were linked to higher suicide risk in bvFTD patients. Patients who attempted suicide were younger and had longer disease duration. Notably, 40% of bvFTD patients with parkinsonism exhibited high suicidal ideation.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with bvFTD exhibit a substantial risk for suicide.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is recommended to validate these findings and inform clinical interventions.
