Summary

In healthy older adults, gait speed and stride length showed limited links to cognitive function. Spatial gait measures, not temporal ones, were associated with cognition, while white matter hyperintensities showed no independent gait contribution.

  • This study investigates the relationship between various gait parameters and cognitive function in an elderly cohort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between detailed gait measures and cognitive performance in cognitively healthy older individuals.
  • To determine if white matter hyperintensities (WMH) independently influence gait characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • 178 cognitively healthy older adults underwent neuropsychological testing and MRI.
  • Spatiotemporal and variability gait metrics were collected during two 10-meter walks.
  • Linear regression analyses were performed, controlling for confounders and using stepwise selection for cognitive variables.

Main Results:

  • Greater stride length correlated with better performance on Trail Making Test A and Boston Naming Test.
  • Stride time variability was associated with Trail Making Test A performance.
  • White matter hyperintensity volume did not independently predict any gait measures.

Conclusions:

  • No robust association was found between gait and non-motor cognitive function in this high-functioning elderly sample.
  • Specific spatial gait characteristics showed some relationship with cognition, meriting further research.
  • White matter hyperintensities did not independently impact gait parameters in this cohort.
