1Sultan Abdulwadoud Alshoabi, MD. Department of Diagnostic Radiologic Technology, College of Applied Medical Sciences, Taibah University, Almadinah Almunwwarah, Saudi Arabia.
Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) can present with severe neurological symptoms like coma. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with anti-tuberculous drugs are crucial for recovery and preventing long-term disability.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Radiology
Background:
- Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a severe form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
- Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for patient outcomes.
Observation:
- A 32-year-old male presented with coma, fever, weight loss, and altered behavior.
- Clinical findings included high-grade fever and coma; imaging revealed cardiomegaly, pericarditis, meningeal enhancement, cerebral granulomas, and ischemic lesions.
Findings:
- Cerebrospinal fluid culture confirmed Tuberculous meningitis.
- The patient showed significant improvement with anti-tuberculous therapy, corticosteroids, and supportive care.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering TBM in patients with unexplained neurological deterioration.
- Aggressive management can lead to full recovery without neurological deficits.
