Summary

Gas naturally flows to areas of least resistance, complicating severe unilateral lung disease treatment in the ICU. Spontaneous breathing with mechanical ventilation can help recruit collapsed alveoli in these patients.

  • Spontaneous breathing in conscious patients can improve ventilation.
  • Mechanical ventilation, when delivered via a left main stem bronchus endotracheal tube, can aid in recruiting collapsed alveoli.

Implications:

  • This approach may offer a strategy for managing severe unilateral lung disease in the ICU.
  • Optimizing ventilation in critical care settings requires understanding patient's spontaneous breathing efforts and precise ventilator management.
