Combined pentagonal resection and inferior retractor plication (PR + IRP) effectively treats involutional lower eyelid entropion in Chinese patients. This surgical approach demonstrates a high success rate with a low recurrence of entropion.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Oculoplastic Surgery
Background:
- Involutional lower eyelid entropion is a common condition.
- Surgical correction is necessary to prevent ocular surface damage.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of combined pentagonal resection and inferior retractor plication (PR + IRP) for primary involutional lower eyelid entropion.
- To assess outcomes in the Chinese population.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 52 eyelids from 46 patients treated between May 2009 and May 2017.
- Data collected included patient demographics, pre-operative laxity, and post-operative outcomes and complications.
Main Results:
- The overall success rate for PR + IRP was 90.4%.
- No recurrence of entropion was observed.
- Complications included residual entropion (2.1%), eyelid notching (4.4%), infection (2.2%), and overcorrection (2.2%).
Conclusions:
- Combined PR + IRP is an effective surgical treatment for primary involutional entropion.
- The procedure offers a low recurrence rate for entropion.
- Eyelid notching is a potential post-operative complication.
