Modified Boxplots

11.0K
A standard box and whisker plot informs us about the spread of the data in a given sample. One can identify the minimum value, maximum value, first quartile value, second quartile or median value, and third quartile.
However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
Initially, we calculate the adjusted...

Frustration and Conflict: Approach-Approach, Approach-Avoidance

529
Frustration occurs when people are obstructed or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. For example, when someone's input is ignored in a discussion, it can lead to feelings of frustration. Conflict, however, arises from opposing interests, goals, or actions. Conflicts can take various forms based on the nature of these opposing desires or goals.
One common type of conflict is the Approach–Approach Conflict. In this case, a person faces two desirable...

Actuarial Approach

308
The actuarial approach, a statistical method originally developed for life insurance risk assessment, is widely used to calculate survival rates in clinical and population studies. This method accounts for participants lost to follow-up or those who die from causes unrelated to the study, ensuring a more accurate representation of survival probabilities.
Consider the example of a high-risk surgical procedure with significant early-stage mortality. A two-year clinical study is conducted,...

Information Processing Approach

568
The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is...

The Nativist Approach01:21

The Nativist Approach

446
The nativist approach to infant cognitive development proposes that infants are born with inherent knowledge structures that allow them to interpret the world almost immediately. This perspective contrasts with earlier developmental theories, such as those proposed by Jean Piaget, which emphasized a more gradual acquisition of cognitive abilities through interaction with the environment. One key concept in this approach is object permanence — the understanding that objects continue to...

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers01:19

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers

1.8K
Leukotriene modifiers, or cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists, are medications used to manage chronic asthma. These agents target specific inflammatory mediators produced during arachidonic acid metabolism, an essential process in generating inflammation in the body.
Leukotriene modifiers work through two distinct mechanisms:

Summary

A modified retrosigmoid (MRS) approach enhances surgical exposure of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and deep vascular structures. This safe, straightforward technique offers an alternative to radical skull base surgery for posterior fossa lesions.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Skull Base Surgery
  • Cerebellopontine Angle (CPA) Anatomy

Background:

  • The traditional retrosigmoid (RS) approach offers limited visualization of the CPA's inferior compartment.
  • Radical skull base approaches, while effective, are complex and linked to substantial patient morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a modified retrosigmoid (MRS) approach for improved surgical access.
  • To detail the surgical anatomy and procedural steps of the MRS.

Main Methods:

  • A modified retrosigmoid craniotomy technique was developed.
  • The surgical steps and relevant anatomy for the MRS approach were outlined.

Main Results:

  • The MRS approach provides superior exposure of the CPA and critical deep vascular structures.
  • This technique involves a modified RS craniotomy with limited sigmoid sinus exposure.

Conclusions:

  • The MRS approach is a safe and effective alternative for selected posterior fossa lesions.
  • It offers a straightforward surgical corridor, avoiding the morbidity of radical cranial base procedures.
