Background:

  • Limited understanding of the link between functional/mental status and Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (LUTD) in stroke survivors.
  • Stroke patients frequently experience neurological deficits impacting various bodily functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess functional and mental status in stroke patients.
  • To identify associations between these statuses and the prevalence, severity, and bother of LUTD.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 260 stroke patients from six Turkish hospitals.
  • Utilized Danish Prostatic Symptom Score (DAN-PSS) for LUTD, Modified Barthel Index (MBI) for function, I-QoL for quality of life, and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) for cognition.

Main Results:

  • 93.5% of patients had at least one LUTD finding, with nocturia being most common (75.8%).
  • Patients with LUTD showed significantly lower MBI, MMSE, and I-QoL scores compared to those without.
  • Urinary incontinence correlated with poorer MBI, MMSE, and I-QoL scores.

Conclusions:

  • LUTD is a prevalent issue in stroke patients.
  • Poorer cognitive and functional status, and reduced quality of life are associated with LUTD in this population.
  • Bladder dysfunction warrants attention during stroke rehabilitation.
