Enhanced supportive supervision improved lady health workers' (LHWs) performance in managing childhood pneumonia and diarrhoea. However, consistent availability of essential commodities remains a challenge for integrated community case management.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Pediatrics
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Integrated community case management (iCCM) is crucial for addressing childhood pneumonia and diarrhoea.
- Effective supervision is vital for optimizing the performance of frontline health workers.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of enhanced supportive supervision on lady health workers' (LHWs) effectiveness in iCCM for childhood pneumonia and diarrhoea.
Main Methods:
- Thirty-four supervisors were randomized into intervention and comparison groups.
- The intervention involved enhanced supervisory skills training and structured feedback for LHWs.
- Worker and caregiver performance was assessed through multiple evaluations and household surveys.
Main Results:
- Intervention LHWs demonstrated improved assessment of dehydration and correct diarrhoea classification compared to the control group.
- Supervisory performance improved in clinical skills correction and feedback frequency within the intervention arm.
- Caregiver perception of LHWs' capability for pneumonia and diarrhoea care showed minimal difference; consistent commodity availability was lacking.
Conclusions:
- Enhanced supportive supervision positively influences the performance of LHWs in community-based child illness management.
- Sustained improvements in iCCM require comprehensive support, including regular training, adequate logistics, and essential medical supplies.
