Summary

Infraslow oscillations (ISO) in sigma activity and sleep spindles are confirmed during sleep. These slow oscillations are most prominent in specific brain regions and during the latter half of the night.

Background:

  • Previous research indicated infraslow oscillations (ISO) in EEG sigma (10-15 Hz) activity during sleep.
  • A detailed analysis of ISO specifically within sleep spindles was lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the basic properties of ISO in sigma activity and sleep spindles during baseline sleep.
  • To analyze fast sleep spindles and sigma activity (13-15 Hz) in NREM stage 2 and slow wave sleep (SWS).

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed sigma activity using power of power of the EEG signal.
  • Developed a novel method to analyze ISO in sleep spindles by converting EEG to a binary spindle on/off signal.
  • Validated the method by comparing spectral properties with randomly permutated spindle signals and surrogate data.

Main Results:

  • Confirmed the existence of ISO in sigma activity, with frequencies below 0.02 Hz.
  • ISO in sigma activity were most prominent in the high sigma band and centro-parieto-occipital regions.
  • Similar ISO modulation was observed in sleep spindle activity, particularly in the centro-parieto-occipital regions and left hemisphere during the second half of the night.

Conclusions:

  • The comparison of spectral properties of binary and permutated event signals is an effective method for detecting slow oscillatory phenomena.
  • This study provides a detailed characterization of ISO in sleep spindles and sigma activity.
