Summary

This study investigated lichen planus (LP) antibodies in fetal skin, finding no significant differences between LP patients and controls. Previous findings of specific LP antibody binding to fetal skin could not be replicated.

Background:

  • Lichen planus (LP) is a common papulosquamous disease with a suspected autoimmune basis.
  • LP-specific antigens and circulating antibodies have been identified in LP patients.
  • Previous research suggested LP antibodies bind to second-trimester fetal skin.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To reproduce and verify previous findings on LP antibody binding to fetal skin.
  • To investigate potential autoimmune markers in lichen planus pathogenesis.

Main Methods:

  • Indirect immunofluorescence assays were performed.
  • Frozen sections of human foreskin and second-trimester fetal skin were used as substrates.
  • Sera from 17 LP patients and 7 healthy controls were tested.

  • Both LP patient sera and normal control sera reacted with epidermal cells above the basal layer of fetal skin.
  • No reactivity was observed with the human foreskin substrate.
  • No significant differences in reactivity were found between LP patient sera and control sera.

Conclusions:

  • The previously reported specific binding of LP antibodies to second-trimester fetal skin could not be confirmed.
  • Discrepancies may stem from variations in fetal tissue collection, non-specific antibody binding, or elevated immunoglobulin levels in LP patients and controls.
