Abstract:
Renal prostaglandins are important modulators of renal hemodynamic function. In basal conditions, inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) has no significant effect on renal blood flow or glomerular filtration rate. However when sodium or water depletion are used to enhance the dependence of renal hemodynamics on renal prostaglandin synthesis, NSAID administration significantly decrease renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. A better use of these drugs is necessary to minimize these side-effects.
