Scanning Electron Microscopy01:07

Scanning Electron Microscopy

5.5K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Leaky Scanning

5.7K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Primary Healthcare Services01:30

Primary Healthcare Services

2.1K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.
In 1978, international leaders convened in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, for what would be a pivotal event in global health. The Alma-Ata Declaration was the first to call...

Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

2.2K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Electron Carriers01:24

Electron Carriers

91.8K
Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons.
Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...

Electron Affinity03:07

Electron Affinity

43.3K
The electron affinity (EA) is the energy change for adding an electron to a gaseous atom to form an anion (negative ion).

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Digital Health Innovation
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Long wait times for specialist appointments negatively impact patient health and increase healthcare costs.
  • Technological solutions, such as electronic consultations (eConsults), are being adopted to streamline patient referrals and specialist access.
  • eConsults facilitate secure communication between primary care providers and specialists for timely patient care discussions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a global examination of various electronic consultation (eConsult) services.
  • To compare the implementation strategies, challenges, and successes of eConsults across diverse healthcare settings.
  • To identify common themes related to eConsult service structure, benefits, barriers, and enablers.

Main Methods:

  • An environmental scan was performed, including literature reviews (MEDLINE, EMBASE) and gray literature searches (Google).
  • Semistructured interviews were conducted with key informants from identified eConsult services, utilizing the RE-AIM framework.
  • Thematic synthesis analysis was applied to interview transcripts to identify overarching themes.

Main Results:

  • A total of 53 eConsult services were identified through the literature and gray literature search.
  • Ten services participated in interviews, revealing four major themes: service structure, benefits, implementation challenges, and enablers.
  • Key findings highlight common barriers and facilitators to eConsult implementation and growth across different health systems.

Conclusions:

  • eConsult services are implemented globally across varied healthcare contexts and system structures.
  • Despite structural and platform differences, common barriers and enablers influence eConsult implementation and scalability.
  • Reported outcomes include enhanced patient access to specialists and high levels of user satisfaction with eConsult platforms.
