Benefits of Self-Esteem01:25

Benefits of Self-Esteem

199
Self-esteem—an individual's overall evaluation of their worth—plays a complex role in psychological functioning and well-being. It is often associated with many positive traits, such as confidence, optimism, and perseverance. Individuals with high self-esteem typically experience better sleep, manage peer pressure more effectively, and report greater life satisfaction. Conversely, low self-esteem has been consistently linked with increased risks of depression, anxiety, and poor...

Symbiosis00:58

Symbiosis

37.4K
Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

40.8K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Optimal Foraging00:48

Optimal Foraging

13.8K
How animals obtain and eat their food is called foraging behavior. Foraging can include searching for plants and hunting for prey and depends on the species and environment.

Altruism01:03

Altruism

46.1K
Altruistic behaviors are “unselfish” behaviors—those that help another individual at the expense of the individual carrying out the behavior. Despite the negative consequences for the altruistic animal, these behaviors are thought to have evolved for several reasons.

Naturalistic Observations02:30

Naturalistic Observations

17.2K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Summary

Hemithyroidectomy for multinodular goiter does not eliminate hormone replacement needs and carries a risk of completion surgery. However, it does reduce the rate of hypocalcemia compared to total thyroidectomy.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Thyroid Surgery

Background:

  • Multinodular goiter affects 5% of the population.
  • Hemithyroidectomy is an alternative to total thyroidectomy to minimize risks and avoid hormone replacement.
  • Completion thyroidectomy may be required after hemithyroidectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the benefits of hemithyroidectomy versus total thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter.
  • To determine if hemithyroidectomy avoids hormone replacement therapy and its associated risks.
  • To assess the rate of completion thyroidectomy after hemithyroidectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective observational study of patients undergoing thyroid surgery (September 2010 - September 2014).
  • Analysis of hormone replacement rates at 6 months post-hemithyroidectomy.
  • Comparison of postoperative complications, including hypocalcemia, nerve palsy, hematoma, and completion thyroidectomy rates.

Main Results:

  • 84.4% of hemithyroidectomy patients required hormone replacement.
  • Hemithyroidectomy showed a significantly lower rate of definitive hypocalcemia (0% vs 6.3%).
  • 11.3% of hemithyroidectomies necessitated completion surgery due to carcinoma discovery.

Conclusions:

  • Hemithyroidectomy does not consistently avoid hormone replacement and increases the risk of completion thyroidectomy.
  • Hemithyroidectomy offers a benefit by avoiding hypocalcemia.
  • Consider hemithyroidectomy for single toxic/euthyroid nodules or patient refusal of hormone replacement.
