  • Tonsil surgery, including tonsillectomy (TE) and tonsillotomy (TT), is a common procedure in children.
  • Trends in surgical techniques and their impact on healthcare services require ongoing analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze 10-year trends in pediatric tonsil surgery at a tertiary care hospital.
  • To evaluate the effects of these trends on hospital service utilization and healthcare costs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of children under 16 undergoing TE or TT between 2007-2016.
  • Data analyzed from Helsinki University Hospital databases, focusing on procedure types, complications, and costs.

Main Results:

  • A total of 4979 tonsil surgeries were performed; TT became more common than TE after 2012.
  • TT procedures were associated with significantly fewer emergency department visits (1.8/100) and postoperative hemorrhages (0.6%) compared to TE (9.0/100 visits, 6.3% hemorrhage).
  • Two-year follow-up revealed significantly lower healthcare costs for TT compared to TE.
