Multiple Voltage Sources01:25

Multiple Voltage Sources

1.8K
Generally, a single battery is not enough to power some devices. In such cases, batteries can be combined in two ways: in series or in parallel.
In series, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of another battery. Hence, the voltage of each battery is added to give the net voltage, which is increased because each battery boosts the electrons that enter it. The same current flows through each battery because they are connected in series.
Batteries are...

Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

13.4K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

X-ray Crystallography02:18

X-ray Crystallography

26.2K
The size of the unit cell and the arrangement of atoms in a crystal may be determined from measurements of the diffraction of X-rays by the crystal, termed X-ray crystallography.
Diffraction
Diffraction is the change in the direction of travel experienced by an electromagnetic wave when it encounters a physical barrier whose dimensions are comparable to those of the wavelength of the light. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths about as long as the distance between neighboring...

Deconvolution01:20

Deconvolution

585
Deconvolution, also known as inverse filtering, is the process of extracting the impulse response from known input and output signals. This technique is vital in scenarios where the system's characteristics are unknown, and they must be inferred from the observable signals.
Deconvolution involves several mathematical techniques to derive the impulse response. One common approach is polynomial division. In this method, the input and output sequences are treated as coefficients of...

Blinding01:11

Blinding

4.0K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Alternative RNA Splicing02:18

Alternative RNA Splicing

25.1K
Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity.
There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...

Summary

This study enhances ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD) for underwater acoustics. By combining multiple channel impulse responses (CIRs), the improved method robustly detects multipath signals, improving acoustic signal processing.

Area of Science:

  • Underwater acoustics
  • Signal processing
  • Array processing

Background:

  • The original ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD) algorithm retrieves channel impulse response (CIR) using single-beam phase information.
  • Low coherence in multipath signals can lead to inaccurate channel estimates in the standard RBD algorithm.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To improve the performance and robustness of the ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD) algorithm.
  • To enhance the detection and resolution of multipath arrival structures in acoustic signals.

Main Methods:

  • Applied the alternating projection maximum likelihood estimator to separate multipath signals.
  • Coherently combined multiple channel impulse responses (CIRs) derived from separated signals.

Main Results:

  • The proposed method demonstrated more robust detection of multipath arrivals compared to the original RBD algorithm.
  • Verified performance using Noise09 sea experiment data, showing improved resolution of multipath structures.

Conclusions:

  • The enhanced RBD method provides a more reliable approach for channel estimation in environments with low signal coherence.
  • This advancement offers improved multipath resolution for underwater acoustic signal processing.
