This study introduces glutathione modified silver nanoparticles (GSH-Ag NPs) as a selective colorimetric sensor for detecting the pesticide pyrimethanil in water. The novel sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity for accurate pyrimethanil analysis.
Area of Science:
- Nanotechnology
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Science
Background:
- Pesticide detection is crucial for environmental and food safety.
- Development of selective and sensitive chemosensors is an ongoing challenge.
- Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) offer unique optical properties for sensing applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a glutathione-modified silver nanoparticle (GSH-Ag NP) based chemosensor.
- To detect the pesticide pyrimethanil in aqueous solutions.
- To achieve selective, sensitive, and colorimetric detection of pyrimethanil.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of GSH-Ag NPs via reduction of AgNO3 with NaBH4 and modification with glutathione.
- Utilizing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of Ag NPs.
- Employing colorimetric assays for visible signal transduction.
- Characterization using 1H NMR, FT-IR, and computational simulation for selectivity confirmation.
Main Results:
- GSH-Ag NPs exhibited high selectivity for pyrimethanil over other pesticides.
- Selective recognition was translated into a visible color change.
- Quantitative detection showed a linear relationship from 10 μM to 1 mM.
- A low detection limit of 3.87 μM was achieved for pyrimethanil.
Conclusions:
- GSH-Ag NPs serve as an effective colorimetric chemosensor for pyrimethanil detection.
- The sensor offers a practical method for analyzing pyrimethanil in real-world samples.
- This approach provides a sensitive and selective tool for pesticide monitoring.

However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
