Hybridoma Technology01:31

Hybridoma Technology

17.6K
Hybridoma technology is used for the large-scale production of monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies bind to only a single antigenic determinant or epitope. Such antibodies are used in research, diagnostics, and disease therapy. The hybridoma technology established in 1975 by Georges Köhler and Cesar Milstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1984 for revolutionizing research and therapy.

Genetic Screens02:46

Genetic Screens

5.7K
Genetic screens are tools used to identify genes and mutations responsible for phenotypes of interest. Genetic screens help identify individuals or a group of people at risk of developing  genetic diseases and help them with early intervention, targeted therapy, and reproductive options.
Forward genetic screens
Forward or “classical” genetic screens involve creating random mutations in an organism’s DNA using radiation, mutagens, or insertion of additional bases, which...

Cancer02:18

Cancer

54.2K
Cancers arise due to mutations in genes involved in the regulation of cell division, which leads to unrestricted cell proliferation. Modern science and medicine have made great strides in the understanding and treatment of cancer, including eradicating cancer in some patients. However, there is still no cure for cancer. This is largely due to the fact that cancer is a large group of many diseases.

What is Cancer?02:12

What is Cancer?

14.4K
Cells and tissues must meticulously coordinate their activities for the normal functioning of the human body. Therefore, they exhibit socially responsible behavior - resting, growing, dividing, differentiating, or dying - for the organism’s benefit. Cancer arises when cells divide uncontrollably and invade other tissues or organs.
Although people have known about cancer for centuries, it was only in 1761 that Giovanni Morgagni of Padua performed a detailed autopsy of...

Cancer Vaccines01:30

Cancer Vaccines

1.0K
Cancer treatment vaccines are a rapidly evolving field that offers a promising approach to immunotherapy. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, cancer treatment vaccines are designed to treat existing cancers by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer vaccines come in two categories: preventive (prophylactic) and treatment (active). Preventive vaccines, such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, protect against viruses that cause certain...

Summary

Mobile Health (mHealth) shows promise for cancer screening in rural India, improving community health worker reliability. However, mHealth alone cannot overcome social and financial barriers to follow-up care.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Digital Health
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Cervical and oral cancer rates are high in India, with poor survival due to late detection.
  • Limited screening programs and infrastructure hinder early diagnosis in rural areas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile health (mHealth) supported cancer screening intervention.
  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of mHealth for community health workers (CHWs) in low-health-literacy populations.

Main Methods:

  • Developed and implemented an mHealth prototype for cervical and oral cancer screening in three rural Indian sites.
  • Screening was conducted by CHWs using visual inspection methods, supported by nurses.
  • Evaluated screening uptake, follow-up attendance, and gathered qualitative data on user experience and barriers.

Main Results:

  • Screened 8686 individuals, primarily for oral cancer (98%).
  • Positivity rates were 28% for cervical and 5% for oral cancer screening, with 37% and 31% follow-up attendance, respectively.
  • CHWs found the mHealth prototype reliable, and it positively impacted their social standing, though barriers to follow-up persist.

Conclusions:

  • mHealth interventions can facilitate cancer screening in underserved rural communities.
  • mHealth is insufficient to overcome significant social, cultural, and financial barriers to screening and follow-up.
  • Integrated approaches combining mHealth, community education, and clear diagnostic/treatment pathways are crucial for success.
