The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison02:57

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

56.1K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Introduction to Special Senses

7.5K
Sensory receptors play an integral part in comprehending our external and internal environments. They receive diverse stimuli, converting them into the nervous system's electrochemical signals. This conversion occurs as the stimulus alters the sensory neuron's cell membrane potential, instigating the generation of an action potential. This action potential is subsequently transmitted to the central nervous system (CNS), which integrates with other sensory data or higher cognitive...

Tactile and Chemical Senses01:27

Tactile and Chemical Senses

795
Tactile senses encompass touch, temperature, and pain, each mediated by specific receptors. Touch receptors detect mechanical energy or pressure against the skin. Sensory fibers from these receptors enter the spinal cord and relay information to the brain stem. Here, most fibers cross over to the opposite side of the brain. The touch information then moves to the thalamus, which projects a map of the body's surface onto the somatosensory areas of the parietal lobes in the cerebral cortex.

Partial Fractions01:28

Partial Fractions

217
A partial fraction is a component of a rational expression represented as the sum of simpler fractions. When a rational function is expressed as a ratio of two polynomials, it can often be decomposed into a sum of fractions whose denominators are simpler polynomials, typically linear or irreducible quadratic factors. This process is called partial fraction decomposition, and it is used to simplify complex expressions for integration, solving equations, or analysis.Partial fraction decomposition...

Subcellular Fractionation01:32

Subcellular Fractionation

8.9K
The homogenate obtained after cell lysis contains various membrane-bound organelles that can be further separated into pure fractions by subcellular fractionation. These isolates are used to study specific cellular components, analyze localized protein activity, and are even employed in diagnostics. Fractionation is typically achieved using centrifugation methods, the most common being density-gradient and differential centrifugation.
Differential Centrifugation

Mixtures of Gases: Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and Mole Fractions03:03

Mixtures of Gases: Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and Mole Fractions

44.1K
Unless individual gases chemically react with each other, the individual gases in a mixture of gases do not affect each other’s pressure. Each gas in a mixture exerts the same pressure that it would exert if it were present alone in the container. The pressure exerted by each individual gas in a mixture is called its partial pressure.

Summary

Cuttlefish can distinguish between some fractions, showing a primitive sense of non-integer numbers. Their ability to perceive quantity differences follows Weber's law, similar to integers.

Area of Science:

  • Animal cognition
  • Comparative psychology
  • Neuroethology

Background:

  • Number sense is crucial for animal survival and social behaviors.
  • Cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) can discriminate integer quantities.
  • Fraction number sense in invertebrates remains unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if cuttlefish can discriminate fractional quantities.
  • To explore the potential for fraction number sense in invertebrates.
  • To examine cuttlefish preference for larger quantities involving fractions.

Main Methods:

  • Cuttlefish prey-selection behavior was used to test discrimination.
  • Two-alternative choices presented fractions: 1 vs. 1.5, 1.5 vs. 2, 2 vs. 2.5, and 2.5 vs. 3.
  • Quantity 1.5 was defined as one large shrimp and one small shrimp (half the size of the large one).

Main Results:

  • Cuttlefish successfully chose the larger quantity in 1 vs. 1.5, 1.5 vs. 2, and 2 vs. 2.5 pairs.
  • Discrimination failed for the 2.5 vs. 3 pair.
  • Results suggest adherence to Weber's law, where perceived difference relates to initial quantity.

Conclusions:

  • Cuttlefish exhibit a primitive understanding of fractions.
  • The just noticeable difference for fractions may be similar to integers.
  • Further research is needed to distinguish quantity from number sense in fractions.
